Today there are over 500 local, “community-based” environmental groups in Connecticut, many with unique capabilities and expertise that play key roles in shaping environmental management policy and practices across the state. This program describes how such local initiatives have the potential to pioneer new approaches to environmental management, foster collaboration among stakeholders, and achieve results beyond those of traditional governmental regulatory approaches. It highlights the activities of local groups around the state, fundamental barriers standing in the way of local groups’ efforts to accomplish their missions, and the “grassroots groundswell” that provides a critical opportunity to empower community-based initiatives and realize the promise inherent in each. |
